Say what you will about America, but free refills are something I’m very passionate about. I think it’s an excellent idea and I’m glad Ikkyu does it as long as you preserve some of your soup. Continue reading

Totto Ramen, New York
I was quickly hustled to the bar so that the couples in the restaurant wouldn’t be reminded of the harsh life in the single’s jungle. I sat down and creepily watched the chefs at work. To say that they were merely efficient would be like saying that Meryl Streep is an ok actor. It was clockwork; and they still had enough time to mingle with the single people who would be ordering love heart t-shirts for themselves on Valentine’s Day. Continue reading
Basta Pasta, New York
I’m a food porn producer; some might even go as far as to call me a food porn star. However, that doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy some food porn from other food porn stars on off days. Sometimes, when I haven’t been out to eat in a while; I’ll live vicariously through the foodgasms of some other folks in the food blogosphere. Continue reading
Momofuku Noodle Bar, New York
I’m a terrible cook. Case in point: when I was younger; I thought that dumping a bunch of ingredients into my fried rice would make it tastier. Leftovers? They’re going in. Bacon? Well, you can’t leave that out. Pizza from three nights ago? It’s different, but normal is overrated so you’re going in too! Continue reading
Hide-Chan Ramen, New York
This was deceptively spicy. Being that I’m a simpleton; I usually associate the colour red with spiciness so I was caught off guard. Considering the ‘spicy’ tuna buns had been mild, I assumed this bowl of ramen would be of that ilk. Continue reading
Hakata-Maru Ramen, Haymarket
I don’t have a point of comparison but the garlic dynamic made this an incredibly delicious bowl of ramen for me. The garlic flakes added another texture and flavour that was just what I wanted even if I didn’t know I wanted it beforehand. Continue reading
Sushizilla, Chippendale
It took me a while before I settled on a proper haircut. Some of my closest (and not so closest) friends will say that I have actually never had a proper haircut. I would like to assure you that this is false and that my hair is a deal breaker only to those that already don’t … Continue reading
Dog Dog Japon, CBD
If these hot dogs were the Beatles; my karaage dog would’ve been John Lennon, my kransky would’ve been Paul McCartney, the teriyaki chicken would’ve been George Harrison and the poor potato and beef croquette would’ve been Ringo Starr. He would’ve been the drawcard for any other band but tonight was not the night. Continue reading
Chanoma Cafe, CBD
The level of cheese on this hot dog was the equivalent of how cheesy I am towards girls I like. From a distance you think it’s way too much but observe it from up close you know that it means well and that I taste good.
That sounded really weird. I’m sorry. Continue reading
Ippudo Sydney, CBD
Do you remember your first kiss? I do. It was in a game of truth or dare and it was with a girl I didn’t really like. There were half a dozen pre-pubescents watching me as I closed my eyes at the last second. Is it possible to ever recreate that moment (not that I would want to) without the use of a time machine? Nope.
With food it’s possible. Maybe the cut of pork is slightly different and the broth is a little hotter than previously, but the feeling and the chemical reaction within your mind and body is identical. Continue reading
