A friend who I hadn’t spoken in a while asked me what it was like to blog about food for a living.

After laughing for a solid thirty seconds, I decided to just roll with it. This is one of my favourite hobbies (along with grooming my moustache and pretending to steal my nephew’s nose) so I decided to embellish a little bit and break down what the week in the life of a food blogger was like.

I told her about the endless hours I spend in newsagents reading recipe magazines. I told her about having to check into hotels under fake names so that my tens of fans couldn’t stalk me. I told her about weekly traditions like Chursday, Fryday and of course Pieday.

Wait, you don’t know about Pieday on Fryday at the Pie Tin in Newtown?

Welcome to my life:

I’ve been wanting to go to the Pie Tin for a really long time. My plans to come here have been foiled more than any baking tray in the history of mankind . Fortunately for me, our monthly work lunch was set to be held at the Pie Tin and no one was going to be able to stop me from attending.

I was really hungry. June was rough, I hadn’t been sleeping well and there were no new Game of Thrones episodes due ’til 2015.

So, I went in. Hard.

You gotta get fries on Fryday. These were easily some of the best sweet potato fries I had ever had the pleasure of sampling. They were very crispy and actual fries. Some folks prefer chunks of pure sweet potato but I can’t ever go past a nice and crunchy fry. They were quite salty as well but my taste buds enjoyed them immensely.

Let’s talk about the pie:

The crust was very sturdy but still flaked away once you prodded it forcefully with a fork. There’s a bit of a gap between the feeling and the crust. I assume this is to fortify the structure of the pie and to prevent it from collapsing all over the place. I spent half the meal eating with a fork before realising the optimal way was to use my hands.

Believe me, this isn’t the time for table manners. Using your hands and allowing your mouth to bite through the crust and filling at the same time is the best way to enjoy any of the pies at Pie Tin. Pie, burgers and chicken wings are always better when you’re using your own mitts.

As you can see from the photo, this pie was cheesier than me buying flowers after a first date. The consistency was reminiscent of baked Mac & cheese minus the crunchy layer you get after you pull it out of the oven. The spinach and pumpkin in the pie were also top notch.

Now, let’s take a look at what my buddies had:

Quote: “They’ve shoved 500g of duck in a pie.”

I think that means he liked it. He also remarked at how good the gravy was (I can vouch for that).

Protip for everyone who decides to go to the Pie Tin after reading this review. Bring a large group and share all the sides. The three of us all opted for sides and were overwhelmed. I left the Pie Tin yelling “WE COULD HAVE HAD IT ALL’ as strangers wondered why the Chinese dude was channelling his inner Adele.

Oh, there’s one more pie by the way…

Tim Tams are an Australian classic like me taking a girl out to dinner to have her tell me we’re great friends. I knew I had to have a slice of this pie as soon as I made eye contact. It was love at first pi-ght.

This was incredibly rich and decadent. You’ll have absolutely no question concerning its authenticity upon first bite. The signature taste of Tim tams with a nice base is just absolutely divine. I could’ve had 3.14 of these on an empty stomach. Unfortunately, my stomach was filled with Mac & cheese as well as a side of sweet potato fries that rendered me immobile for the rest of the day.
