Feel Good Burgers, Rhodes

It’s time to talk about Feel Good Burgers in Rhodes.

Starting out as a food truck (much like my favourite Sydney burger spot, the legendary Mister Gee), the team at Feel Good decided to ditch the truck and set up a permanent spot in Rhodes. Going from a food truck to a brick-and-mortar restaurant is the hospitality equivalent of an actor going from TV to the movies. Will they be able to handle the scale, pressure and a close-up where every pore, pimple scar and individual hair is magnified?

Spoiler alert: they handle it spectacularly.

If you want to compare burger spots like for like, the cheeseburger is your sample. Every place offers one and the ingredients are almost always the same (which allows you to make a true judgement call).

Ketchup, mustard, pickles, cheese, bun and the beef (not to be confused with The Bear, the hit FX series featuring Jeremy Allen White).

These are the foundational pieces, and Feel Good makes you feel extra good once you start biting into their symphony.

The perfect blend of ketchup (gotta be Heinz) and mustard, 3x bread & butter pickles, perfectly melted cheese on a smashed patty (thin but not smashed to the point where you’re not sure if it’s beef or A4 Reflex paper) and a Martin’s potato roll (as I’ve mentioned before, the crème de la crème of all burger buns) locks everything in so that your taste buds can lock in.

And they have no intention of getting paroled.

Every burger on Feel Good’s menu contains the same smashed patty where the entire process is done in-house.

The mincing, shaping, inspecting, seasoning and grilling all happen at their home base on Leeds Street to ensure the base of their burgers lives up to its name; it’s got to make its clientele feel good regardless of how they prefer their smashed burgers.

With the classic smash, creamy burger sauce takes the place of mustard and ketchup; all other aspects remain the same as its cheesy cousin (this parallels my relationship with my baby cousin except he’s taller, owns multiple houses and my extended family loves him; other than that, we share all of the same traits).

I don’t think you should compare anything to Shake Shack. My love for Shake Shack is completely unconditional and has spanned almost 20 years; my Mt. Rushmore of completely unconditional love is Shake Shack, my wife, Michael Jordan and I’m leaving that fourth spot open for now (the prediction markets are taking bets on everything from black T-shirts with a small logo on the left pec, white sneakers, pickleball, my grandparents and pizza).

I’m not about to do that to Feel Good because it’s unfair to everyone involved.

However, I will say that this is the first burger spot I’ve been to that makes me think, “Hmm, maybe I don’t HAVE to book that trip to NYC later this year.” It’s a damn good option that stands alone; the Sydney restaurant graveyard is littered with burger purveyors who have tried to copy Shake Shack, but Feel Good might be the one that levitates above them all.

The Feel Good burger sauce is back in the mix but you’re adding some fresh components with lettuce and tomato to the party and you’re suddenly dancing to a song that only you can hear.

After I inhaled 3x burgers and some fries, a staff member asked me how I felt about the food and whether I had visited before.

After admitting that it was my first time at Feel Good, he disappeared then reappeared with dessert (what a party trick).

Chocolate and vanilla soft serve did not come alone but instead came beside a deliciously chewy, salty and decadent chocolate chip cookie from Bite (a very good cafe in Belfield known for their NYC-style treats).

Just an undefeated duo and perfect way to leave you feeling good after Feel Good.
